Grit City Knives

Tacoma. The Grit City.

Tacoma earned its nickname of “Grit City” thanks to its industrial past that is rooted in hardwork and resilience. This nickname, derived from the city’s persevering spirit and tenacity, has been carried forward by local businesses who embody those very qualities.

Meet Joel Green.

Joel is a United States Marine Corp veteran, turned full-time knife maker. Those of us who have the pleasure of knowing Joel know that his company, Grit City Knives, has become synonymous with the same quality and endurance that we see across our great city. It embodies the same tenacity and dedication that built Tacoma, making each knife a piece of the city's legacy.

Grit City Knives is renowned for producing some of the finest handmade blades available that are designed to withstand the toughest of use, ensuring their reliability and durability in all situations. However, at the heart of Joe’s work lies a dedication to crafting knives that are not only highly functional, but that also fuel his strong passion for creating art and sharing it with the community.

We don’t know what is more powerful – witnessing Joe’s craft or the parallels he draws between his art and our city.

His craft goes beyond just the physical creation of his knives; it embodies the spirit of Tacoma itself. The comparison of his art to the city’s enduring grit, resonates deeply with the vision of bringing the Tacoma community together and supporting each other.

Joel’s knives are more than just tools – they’re a reflection of Tacoma's enduring spirit and a celebration of the art of handmade craftsmanship. Those of you fortunate enough to own one know that you possess not just a knife, but a piece of determination, excellence, and…grit.

“It’s a gritty business and Tacoma is just gritty enough. Keep the grit, stay safe, look out for each other.”
